Letters: Gains and losses from the wash-up

O2 supports the important principle of protecting copyright, but we believe the new legal requirements for internet service providers to send warning letters – and if they don't work take more serious action, including disconnecting customers – are a red herring (Internet provider defies digital bill, 9 April). The internet has brought about profound changes to the way we all live and work. New companies and industries have been created, and many long-established companies have embraced the internet and are thriving. Others have found out the hard way what happens when you fail to move with the times. It may sound harsh, but that's life in a market economy – and that's what happens when a technology revolution takes place. The real solution to unlawful file sharing is to come up with new products and services that give consumers the content they want, how they want it, and for a fair price.

• As a recently retired deputy head of a large comprehensive school and one-to-one teacher of under-attaining year nine pupils, I can report that the one-to-one initiative is extremely powerful in raising the self-esteem and achievement of the pupils involved (Sex education and primary curriculum reforms abandoned, 8 April). Pupils were clear that the lessons had changed their understanding of their abilities and raised expectation. I taught maths for 37 years and did not experience any comparable raising of confidence, concentration and potential from such pupils. The legacy of Tory education cuts in the 80s was beginning to be overcome by the Labour government, but these initial cuts from the parliamentary "wash-up" that the Tories have imposed are a reminder of those dark days.

• New legislation that will prevent vulture funds picking over their payment of debts of poor countries was a welcome win from this week's pre-election wash-up (Report, 9 April). With the economic crisis potentially increasing the financial burden of poor nations, passage of the bill is a palpable victory. This law will prevent vulture funds exploiting the worst-off nations by buying up their debt on the cheap to make a quick buck. It will specifically make it illegal for heavily indebted poor countries to be taken to court in the UK to extract payments above what has already been agreed. Ultimately this means the poorest countries can use debt relief to help improve the lives of their citizens instead of being under threat of losing it to the circling vulture funds.
