University guide: University of Winchester

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Winchester

Winchester is a fairly small university, with approximately 3,000 full-time students and a similar number on part-time courses, which makes for a friendly, informal environment where students are free to develop as individuals. Its long history as a teacher training college means that education is still a focus, but there's a wide range of other degrees on offer, too. Winchester is a lovely cathedral city with a refined atmosphere, excellent shopping, and great pubs, cafes and restaurants to suit all tastes. There's another campus, in Basingstoke, which has a major shopping centre but lacks a cathedral.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
All students who are entitled to a full grant will receive £820 a year. Students whose household income is between £25,000 and £39,333 will receive £410. Other scholarships and awards are available.

Accommodation
On-campus or university-managed accommodation guaranteed to all first-year full-time undergraduates who hold Winchester as their firm choice. The university tries to house all students with insurance offers and those who apply through Clearing. Costs range from £76 to £113 a week.

Facilities
The £10m student union includes a 1,200-capacity venue space. Excellent sports facilities with an Olympic-standard athletics track and an all-weather hockey and general sports pitch.

Transport
A 10-minute walk to the city centre and the train station. Winchester is one hour away from London and 20 minutes from Southampton. Bus services are good.
