University guide: University of Wales Institute, Cardiff

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Wales Institute, Cardiff

UWIC is one of the leading new universities in Wales, mainly due to its career-orientated courses that make graduates popular with employers. It's also a top sporting university with first-class facilities and a proud tradition of competition - and success. Cardiff is a lively, cosmopolitan and fun-loving capital city, but still manageable and easy to get around. There's some lovely countryside within easy reach and good transport links to the rest of the UK.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates for 2010-11. Welsh students are eligible for a non-means-tested fee grant from the Welsh assembly of £1,890.

Bursaries
Means-tested bursaries based on a family income of £300 to £500 are available, as well as other bursaries. Also, entry scholarships of up to £1,000. Visit uwic.ac.uk/bursaries.

Accommodation
Not guaranteed, but UWIC will help with finding suitable private accommodation if necessary. Rooms cost between £72.50 and £106 a week.

Facilities
Resources for sport are especially good. A recent investment of £50m will pay for a new Cardiff school of management building, a new food industry centre and a multi-purpose student centre.

Transport
Free student transport between the four campuses, the city centre and popular student housing areas. Cardiff is good for road and rail: London is two hours by train.
