University guide: Swansea University

Our at-a-glance guide to Swansea University

A hot contender for any "best campus" award going, Swansea is virtually unparalleled for its location. It sits in parkland overlooking the Swansea Bay, on the edge of the stunning Gower peninsula. Surfers, walkers and climbers adore it here. When you tire of gazing at the natural splendour, it's a short trip into the centre of Swansea - not so lovely to look at, but, as Wales's second city, a good place to shop, party or get some culture. The university is a consistently popular choice with applicants. The student population numbers 12,652 undergraduates and 2,061 postgraduates. Swansea has a solid academic reputation and an excellent 95% graduate employment rate.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
The university offers a number of scholarships, bursaries and prizes. Visit swansea.ac.uk/scholarships.

Accommodation
Approximately 95% of first-years are guaranteed accommodation, and prices range from £64 to 107 a week. Rent in the city is about £56 to £68 a week.

Facilities
With 1,800-plus computers available for student use, Swansea has one of the best rates of computing provision in the country, and the library has the longest opening hours of any academic library in Wales (8am to 2am). As for the sports village, it houses the Wales national pool, the first 50m pool in Wales.

Transport
An efficient bus service runs from the student village to the main university campus, and the city centre is only a 10-minute journey from campus. Cardiff is an hour away by car and is well served by road and rail links. London Paddington is under three hours away by train and Cardiff International airport is just over one hour away.
