University guide: Teesside University

Our at-a-glance guide to Teesside University

Teesside's campus is close to the centre of Middlesbrough, a town undergoing a transformation - alongside a wide range of bars, cafes and clubs is a stunning new art gallery, Middlesbrough Institute of Modern Art. And if you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, the charming old town of Whitby and the stunning North York Moors are just on your doorstep. Almost £120m has been invested in the university over the past decade. Student numbers have reached 28,000, with widening participation a priority: 98.6% of young, full-time degree entrants attended state schools or colleges. The university enjoys an international reputation for computing teaching and research, and was ranked in the top five for library resources in the 2009 national student survey.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
£750 a year for those from families earning £31,000 or less. Elite athlete bursary scheme of up to £2,000. Care leavers bursary of £1,000 a year for students coming to the university from a care background. Up to 40 scholarships for excellence of £4,000 a year. For further information, visit tees.ac.uk/scholarships.

Accommodation
Priority for halls is given to first-year students, although the university is normally able to offer accommodation to all students who apply. Rents are currently in the range of £49 to £84 a week, but are under review as this publication was going to press.

Facilities
An award-winning student union and a learning resource centre branded excellent by 91% of students. Some first-rate resources, including a hi-tech mock courtroom, an environmental chamber for sports science students, and broadcast-quality video production facilities. A new dental technology training and sports therapy centre opens in 2010.

Transport
City-centre campus, with good coach and rail links to York and Newcastle (both an hour away), Leeds and Manchester. London is two and a half hours by train from Darlington. The airport is 20 minutes away.
