Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Southampton Founded in 1952, Southampton is an innovative university with a global reputation for leading-edge research and scholarship across a broad range of subjects. Its main Highfield campus is located two miles from the centre of Southampton, with other sites spread across Southampton and Winchester. The active student union recently launched a TV station to accompany its award-winning radio station. The campus has benefited from considerable recent investment in world-class facilities, including royal openings for the new £6m purpose-built facility for the Institute of Sound and Vibration Research and the new £9m Institute of Developmental Sciences at Southampton general hospital, the rebuilt Mountbatten building opened in 2009, construction has already begun on the new Institute for Life Sciences and plans are progressing for the Maritime Centre of Excellence. The National Oceanography Centre is here, and the university performs well academically on all fronts.
