Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Stirling

Stirling's campus is regularly described as one of the most beautiful in the world, set in a 300-acre estate, which boasts its own loch and the Robert Adam-designed Airthrey Castle. The city of Stirling, two miles away, is also pretty, with a castle and historic old town.

There are outstanding facilities for sport - as you would expect from Scotland's university for sporting excellence - and a vibrant arts centre on campus. A significant proportion of the 11,500 students are from the local area, but there's an international feel with students from over 90 countries. Stirling was the first university in the UK to introduce the semester system and is proud of the flexibility of its degrees. With no faculty boundaries, students can choose from one of the widest variety of subject combinations.

Fees
Scottish and EU students from outside the UK pay no tuition fees. For other UK students, annual tuition fee of £1,820 for 2010-11.

Bursaries
Young students' bursaries for Scottish students under 25 from lower-income groups (level is dependent on family income), as well as discretionary childcare and hardship funds. Other grants are also available, notably over 70 sports scholarships.

Accommodation
All first-years are guaranteed accommodation. Weekly prices start at £61 for a self-catering room with shared shower and kitchen, and go to £96 for an en suite room sharing a kitchen.

Facilities
The library reopened in 2010 after a multimillion-pound rebuild. There are 24-hour computer labs, the MacRobert arts centre with theatre and cinema; extensive indoor and outdoor sports facilities, including a newly extended tennis centre and gym; a 50m swimming pool; a nine-hole golf course, driving range and golf academy; and a publicly accessible art collection. Not to mention the lively student union with cafes and bars.

Transport
Stirling is well connected to the UK road and rail networks, and is only 45 minutes from both Edinburgh and Glasgow.
