University guide: University of Wales, Newport

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Wales, Newport

The university is on two campuses, one near the city centre which focuses on engineering and computing, business and professional and social studies; and another in the picturesque town of Caerleon, which caters for humanities, science, education and art, media and design. This is also where the student village of over 650 self-catered study bedrooms is located, along with a new building that houses the fashion department and the Wales International Study Centre. Free buses link the two sites, which are officially among the safest in Britain: the university was the first educational establishment to pass an industry-standard security inspection.

The university has been highly rated in the national student survey and applications rose by 76% in four years, starting with the biggest increase in applications anywhere in the UK following a change of status from college to university. Students have also been attracted by a range of new courses in areas such as creative sound and music, forensic computing, computer games design and internet technologies.

The city of Newport is undergoing a £2bn regeneration programme. It has a reputation for producing successful rock bands, and boasts plenty of clubs and entertainment venues
