University guide: The Courtauld Institute of Art

Our at-a-glance guide to the Courtauld Institute of Art

As far as undergraduates go, the Courtauld is a one-trick pony: the only BA course it offers is history of art. But what a trick! The Courtauld is one of Britain's most famous galleries and art institutes, and the 400 students (of whom undergraduates make up about a third) have unrivalled access to it. The spectacular location at Somerset House means that all of London's resources are on your doorstep. The emphasis is on small-group teaching, and the institute prides itself on its friendly feel and academic excellence. Degrees are awarded by the University of London, so you have access to the main university library at Senate House.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
Each year, the institute awards four £4,000 bursaries to first-year undergraduates. These bursaries, normally given in the form of fee waivers or a maintenance award, will continue to be given in years two and three subject to satisfactory academic performance. In addition, all undergraduates in receipt of a full maintenance grant are guaranteed an institute bursary of £319 a year for the three years of the programme.

Accommodation
The institute aims to house as many undergraduates as possible in historic Duchy House, newly refurbished for 2010 and located near Somerset House, and the University of London's intercollegiate halls. First-year BA students will be given priority for accommodation.

Facilities
Outstanding libraries and the the Courtauld Gallery's collection of paintings, drawings and prints, and sculpture and decorative arts.

Transport
Located in central London and, therefore, connected to most underground, rail and bus networks.
