University guide: University of Greenwich

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Greenwich

There aren't many universities that can boast a world heritage site, but this is one of them. The main campus is on the banks of the Thames in three baroque buildings designed by Sir Christopher Wren at the end of the 17th century. Other sites are Avery Hill, in an 86-acre park in Eltham, south-east London, and Medway, another charming campus full of Edwardian redbrick and ivy, near Chatham's historic dockyard. As a result, the 28,000 students are spread between city and more rural locations, though all are part of an institution that is proud of its diversity and committed to widening participation.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11. Fees for some programmes, including those taken at partner colleges, vary. Visit gre.ac.uk/students/finance.

Bursaries
Greenwich offers mature student bursaries and scholarships for students with high Ucas points. More specialised scholarships are available. Visit gre.ac.uk/students/finance/uni_support/bursaries-2010-2011.

Accommodation
Guaranteed for first-years. Prices range from about £74 to £163 a week.

Facilities
Major libraries, computing facilities, student union facilities, catering facilities and bars at all campuses. Avery Hill has a new gym and sports fields. Medway has a sports centre. Greenwich is close to a council-run sports centre, as well as plenty of bars, restaurants and takeaways. It is also just down the river from the 02 Arena, voted the best-attended music venue in 2008. New developments include a student hall of residence at Medway and a refurbished cafe at the Medway campus.

The university is planning to build a new school of architecture and construction together with a library at a site in the heart of Greenwich town centre.

Transport
The Greenwich campus can be reached by Docklands Light Railway, rail and boat. You can be at London Bridge in 20 minutes. Avery Hill to London Bridge involves a 10-15 minute walk to the station and a 25-minute rail journey. The Medway campus takes just under an hour-and-a-half from London by train, then bus in Medway. Greenwich provides an inter-campus bus service linking Avery Hill to Greenwich and Medway.
