University guide: University of Exeter

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Exeter

One of the lesser-known recipes for happiness is to live in a place where other people choose to go on holiday. Students at Exeter are likely to have permanent smiles on their faces: it has campuses in the cathedral city and also near Falmouth, in Cornwall, as well as plenty of coastline, countryside and glorious weather. Add to that the fact that the Streatham campus is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful in the country, and that Exeter is rated one of the best universities in the UK for "ents", and it's no wonder that increases in applications far exceed the national average. Of course, you'll have to do some work, too - Exeter has an excellent academic reputation.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
Means-tested bursaries of up to £1,500 a year are available for students from low-income backgrounds.

Accommodation
Guaranteed for first-year students. Costs range from £73 to £179 a week for 2010-11.

Facilities
Extensive investment is planned at the Streatham campus, including £130m in on-campus student residences, £25m in the business school, £25m for new facilities in biosciences, and a £48m redevelopment of the Forum Project, the heart of the campus, which is due for completion in December 2011. Library facilities are currently undergoing a modernisation programme, which has already seen a £1m update to St Luke's library. The main library is undergoing a further £5.8m redevelopment, which will launch in December 2011. Users benefit from 24/7 access, self-service machines, state-of-the-art multimedia facilities, enhanced group and silent study areas, and an extended Wi-Fi network.

£11m has been invested in sports facilities making Exeter's facilities among the best in the country. The university's LTA standard indoor tennis centre opened in 2004 and Exeter is one of only nine UK universities to have such facilities. A new £2.25m cricket centre opened in July 2009.

Transport
Short walks into town from either campus in Exeter. The Cornwall campus is a 15-minute bus ride into Falmouth. The M5 is handy for Exeter and London is two hours by train. Two hours or more in the other direction to Falmouth from Exeter.
