University guide: Edge Hill University

Our at-a-glance guide to Edge Hill University

Edge Hill is a rapidly growing institution. It has over 23,000 students and has experienced a consistent increase in applications in recent years, outstripping the national average. The university is expanding physically, too. An investment of £200m over the next 10 years means the main campus - a 160-acre site located outside Liverpool near Ormskirk - is set to expand significantly. An £8m state-of-the-art business and law school opened in 2009, as well as new on-campus accommodation. Edge Hill offers an award-winning student finance package and is a lead institution for widening participation to higher education. The university also ranks in the national top 10 for graduate employment, with 95.3% of students finding jobs or further study within six months of leaving.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11. Fees for siblings of those studying at Edge Hill are reduced by £1,000.

Bursaries
£500 if your household income is less than £25,000 a year. £200 learning support bursary for all students. Other bursaries and scholarships are also available.

Accommodation
Most first-years live on campus, though it isn't guaranteed. Self-catering costs from £53 to £90 a week, and catered halls are £85.

Facilities
The campus boasts a lake, a piazza area and plenty of green space. There is a well-resourced learning resource centre, good IT facilities across the campus and a 24-hour IT suite at the learning innovation centre. Resident DJs and live gigs are regularly hosted by The Venue at the student union, and a range of theatre, music and comedy is performed at the Rose theatre. Sporting Edge, the on-campus sports centre, provides high-quality facilities that were recently included in the Olympic pre-games training guide for London 2012. The centre includes a fully equipped gym, a swimming pool, a running track and sports fields.

Transport
The motorway connections to the rest of the UK are easy enough, but the train journey means a change at Liverpool or Preston.
