University guide: University of Central Lancashire

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Central Lancashire

Uclan is one of the country's largest universities, with 32,000 students, and it aims to provide an excellent experience for every single one of them. It seems to be working as it was rated the top modern university in the country in the latest student experience survey, while 11 areas were rated as world-leading in the latest research assessment exercise.

One hundred and twenty million pounds is currently being invested in new facilities; £17m on the Sir Tom Finney sports centre and £12.5m on the new forensic science building. All courses have an employability strand, and there are some interesting ones to choose from: how about the UK's first foundation degree in nuclear decommissioning, taught on the doorstep of Sellafield power station?

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
£500 in the first year of study, and £319 in subsequent years, where the principal earner in the student's household is earning less than £60,000 a year. Excellence scholarships are also available.

Accommodation
Weekly costs range from about £77 (flats) to £87 (en suite flats), and £89 in university-leased halls of residence. The university can offer advice on private-sector accommodation.

Facilities
New facilities include the £15m Media Factory, which supports work in art, design and performing arts, as well as providing business facilities for entrepreneurial undergraduates, a £10m Burnley campus, the £2m restoration of Tyn Dwr outdoor sports centre in north Wales, and the £5m redevelopment of Westlakes campus in Cumbria.

Transport
The campus is located on the edge of the city centre - it's a 10-minute walk/two-minute bus ride into the main shopping area. Under three hours on the train to London or Glasgow, and an hour from Manchester.
