University guide: University of Derby

Our at-a-glance guide to the University of Derby

Flexibility is something of a watchword at Derby. It invites you to create your own degree, study part-time or choose a fast-track degree. It also emphasises its vocational slant - links with employers and other partners are carefully maintained - and has its own business-to-business division, University of Derby Corporate, which will move to a new £8m enterprise centre in Derby city centre in September 2010.

Derby is a pleasant, historical city, and Buxton, location of the university's Grade II-listed Devonshire campus, is an equally charming spa town. Both are handy for some lovely countryside and easygoing enough to make you feel right at home.

Fees
£3,290 for full-time undergraduates in 2010-11.

Bursaries
£850 for students eligible for the full government grant; then on a sliding scale for those eligible for a partial grant, down to £215. Further awards for local students are also available.

Accommodation
Derby will try to provide a place for every first-year student, in one of seven halls of residence, six in Derby and one in Buxton. The halls are close to the campuses. Room costs range from £70 to £97.02 a week.

Facilities
Sir Richard Branson opened the university's £21m arts, design and technology building in November 2007. Tennis courts and an all-weather sports pitch were opened in spring 2009, and a £13.5m refurbishment of the main Derby site's three towers was recently completed.

Transport
The university has an excellent sustainable transport plan throughout Derby, also servicing the Buxton campus during term-time. Frequent shuttle bus services run between Derby sites and into the city centre. Derby is 10 minutes from the M1 and on the main railway line from London St Pancras.
